Since our listing in 2016, we have secured an exciting pipeline of sustainable, quality energy investments thanks to the expertise of our team of seasoned energy investment professionals who believe in contributing to inclusive economic transformation.  Meet our energy investment team. Hulisani is fortunate that it has a leadership team of highly experienced professionals with a deep knowledge of the energy sector.  

Marubini Raphulu
Chief Executive Officer

With his extensive contacts and deal-making and energy investment experience in the energy sector in South Africa and the rest of Africa, Marubini is set to successfully drive Hulisani into the new age of energy development. He brings with him a wide knowledge of the investment and energy sector, achieved from over 15 years of corporate commercial experience. Marubini left his role as Senior Principal in the Investment Banking Division at Nedbank, to pursue his keen interest in the development of industries involved in the energy sector. He started Medupi Capital, focusing on Principal Investments and Advisory in the Energy Sector, which then partnered with Mazi Capital to create Hulisani in 2015.  In its relatively short existence, Hulisani has showcased Marubini’s clear thinking and sense of direction as well as his track record in the investment sector.

Malungelo Zilimbola

As founder and Chief Investment Officer of Mazi Capital, and the other personality that teamed up to form Hulisani. Malungelo more than adequately provides part of the backbone to the rapidly growing company. With a wealth of experience gained from 17 years of investment management experience with Investec and RMB, Malungelo ventured out on his own to follow a vision close to his heart, showcasing black talent in the financial services industry.

Mazi Capital was conceived in 2006 as a platform for driving transformation whilst not compromising on excellence and investment returns for clients’ hard-earned savings. It now has 25 black professionals on the team ranging from actuaries and engineers to accountants and statisticians.  The team now manages R41 billion in hedge funds, unit trusts and segregated institutional funds.  Malungelo, who holds Honours degrees in Quantity Surveying and Finance, oversees the investment management and strategic direction of Mazi Capital.

Masibulele Dem
Chief Financial Officer

Having a personal vision that aligns strongly with that of Hulisani – ‘making a strong economic contribution to South Africa and the continent’ – Masibulele Dem sits comfortably in the CFO seat. With his particular skills and experience, obtained in various companies and working environments over many years, he makes a meaningful contribution to Hulisani by effectively executing on investments and achieving growth.

With a career that spans 15 years with companies that include KPMG, Barclays, Standard Bank, Mazwe Financial Services and Africa Rising Capital, Masibulele’s experience can be broadly categorised as (1) Controllership (2) Investments and Treasury (3) Strategy and Planning.

With his passion sitting firmly in the area of Finance and Investments, Masibulele’s particular interest is in the energy sector of Sub-Saharan Africa where the supply of energy remains such a challenge. A Chartered Accountant with a B.Com (Honours) from UCT and the University of Natal, he is currently involved in advising on three energy projects on the continent, and gaining valuable experience in the Energy sector.

Pat Mdoda

Pat’s role as Chairman of Hulisani could not have gone to a more relevant, seasoned executive and chairman of the board.  With a BCom and MBA in hand, along with a Certificate in International Relations, he has served at executive level in various blue chip companies as well as a member of the South African Petroleum Industry Association (SAPIA) Board of Governors. The founder and former chairman of Royale Energy Group, Pat participated in the deal structuring and fundraising transaction that turned it into a multi-billion Rand revenue company. He has extensive networks interfacing at senior level in both government and with captains of industry.

Fhedzi Modau
Chief Investment Officer

Audit and Risk Committee

A registered Professional Engineer holding a BSc Degree and MBA, Fhedzi is currently a consultant at Mothee Consulting and has more than 14 years’ experience in the Engineering Sector, particularly in the oil, gas and power sectors. He has worked in a number of countries throughout his career, namely; France, Germany, Nepal, Poland, Thailand, United Kingdom and United States, as well as many African countries. Showcasing his academic and professional background, Fhedzi’s published works can be found in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Transactions of Power Systems, and the South African Journal of Human Resource Management.

Ben Marx
Member – Investment Committee

Who better to be a part of Hulisani’s leadership team than a man whose private motto is to “always act with integrity, honesty, independence and respect for others …”. Currently heading up the auditing section at the University of Johannesburg, Professor Ben Marx’s impressive fields of expertise include: Accounting and Auditing; Corporate Governance and Sustainability; Social and Ethics committees; and Board governance in general, to name but a few.

Equally impressive is Professor Marx’s academic portfolio, from M.Compt (cum laude) to a doctoral thesis in Auditing. He qualified as a CA in 1989 obtaining an overall 3rd place, completed his articles at Deloitte in 1992 and went on to become Senior Lecturer followed by Associate Professor at UFS, culminating in his current Professorial position at UJ.

Professor Marx is a member of many boards, institutions and associations and has 15 years extensive practical and commercial experience.

Harald Schaaf
Chairperson – Investment Committee

Mechanical Engineering & Material Science trained Harald brings to Hulisani over 25 years of project management roles leading a diverse range of energy projects across various continents whilst in the employ of Lahmeyr International GmbH and UCI Utility Consultants International.

Whilst currently the South African Director for Uniper SE, he has previously served as Technical Project Manager in the development of various coal and gas-fired power stations in Germany and the United Kingdom and has performed various other roles internationally in both these countries and many others. Harald holds a Master of Science from Fachhochschule Osnabrück and completed a programme for Executive Development (PED) at IMD Lausanne.

Asanda Notshe
Chairperson – Remuneration, Nomination and Human Resource Committee

As Mazi Capital’s Fund Manager, Asanda has an impressive 12 years financial services experience as a Research Analyst and Portfolio Manager in pensions, banking and investment management. He was formerly an Actuarial Analyst at Alexander Forbes, Business Analyst at RMB Private Bank and Head of Product Development at Stanlib.  Asanda holds a Bachelor of Business Science in Actuarial Science and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and The Actuarial Society of South Africa.

Noluthando Gosa
Chairperson – Social and Ethics Committee

Noluthando is a former investment banker turned entrepreneur who has held various directorships with some top companies such as Investec Asset Management. She is a member of the Institute of Directors of South Africa and the Business Women’s Association and was appointed as a founding Commissioner of the National Planning Commission. Noluthando earned an MBA from the University of New Brunswick in Canada.

Dudu Hlatshwayo

Member – Investment Committee

Dudu’s skill set confirms her solid business management background spanning over 20 years:  Corporate Finance; Business Process Reengineering; Organisational Design; Corporate Strategy Development and Business Planning; Change Management; Programme and Project Management.

Her portfolio is equally impressive, that of Partner at Ernst & Young; Director in the Corporate Finance Division of Andisa Capital; Product Manager for ABSA Bank; Group Executive for Transnet, Product Manager at Telkom. Dudu started her own management consulting business, Change EQ, in 2006.
